HArvest Craft In partnership with Fondation Bonne Recolte

“To foster sustainable community-driven rural development through the establishment of self-sufficient agroecology centers throughout Haiti.”

Since the launch of the HCA in 2018, we noticed a need for a Haitian-led initiative to make the HCA sustainable and long-term. After a rigorous process, we helped establish Fondation Bonne Recolte (FBR), a Haitian foundation, to carry the work forward as we are committed to a community-led approach.

FBR is now taking the Agroecology Center model forward with the Haiti Center for Agroecology (HCA) to bring ongoing sustainable development and environmental restoration to rural Haiti. Harvest Craft will continue fundraising to support FBR in this initiative.

The Haiti Center for Agroecology (HCA) is a 30-acre Research and Education Center near Jacmel, Haiti that seeks to engage in agricultural research, training and education of local farmers and university students.

Over 400+ farmers are benefitting from, and are enrolled in our HCA programs, which include monthly trainings, seedling distributions and access to our research and demonstration plots.

Center Programs

Over the last 10 years of Harvest Craft, we’ve refined and developed this three-pronged approach to address the biggest needs of the community in Jacmel, Haiti to restore livelihoods and landscapes.

  • Teams are assigned to specific communities to guide the design process over five years. The teams do this through demonstrations, training, scheduled follow-up, and provision of physical resources (trees and seasonal crops).

  • Help communities create community-wide water management programs such as large earthworks for water harvesting and tree planting, water catchment, water distribution, and more to revitalize landscapes and ecosytems.

  • Each project should have at least one or more field schools where they are producing a multitude of products for sale through the cooperative. The cooperative experiments with food processing and other value-added products to deliver goods to market.

Farmer Testimonials

“This (HCA) program has allowed me to have income at all times. It’s allowed me to cover my small expenses, grow produce to sell, ensure income, and also bring home vegetables.

For this reason, I thank the HCA and this program as well as the financial supporters who’ve made this possible.”

- Farmer Notoise, Regular HCA Participant

“I thank the leaders of the (HCA) program and I thank the farm technicians at the HCA farm for the technical training that they give me. I’m very satisfied with the seedlings they give me monthly. Thanks to the success of my harvest I was able to buy food for my family and buy two goats.”

- Farmer Guerrier, Regular HCA Participant

“Thanks to the training sessions of the HCA program! It has taught me how to grow vegetables, prepare organic fertilizers, prepare insecticides, graft and many other things. More children now eat the eggplant and chili pepper from our garden and are stronger and happier. Before we did not produce chili and eggplant due to lack of water. Now we know that we can produce it and protect it in simple ways. Thank you!”
