2019 campaign

Why give today?

Today is the day when your dollar donation goes twice as far!

Have you considered supporting the vision of Harvest Craft in the past? Generous donors offered to match every dollar made to this Giving Tuesday campaign for the 2020 farmer trainings.

In southern Haiti, we witnessed this last year the power of the Haiti Center for Agroecology (HCA) to cultivate change with the successful launch of the farmer trainings. We’ve always felt that we’ve been “blessed to be a blessing” and this is why we’re excited to announce an opportunity to continue the blessing cycle.

Watch the new overview video today!

At the HCA, we conduct monthly Farmer Trainings & with your support this #GivingTuesday we will continue to offer them in 2020.

Monthly Farmer Training Highlights

  • 160+ FARMERS ATTENDED THIS LAST YEAR, and we average around 100 local farmers per month

  • HOSTED 10 FARMER TRAINING MEETINGS at the HCA so far in 2019, with additional hands-on follow up sessions for those who wanted additional practice with the techniques and tools we showcased

  • TRAINED ON THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS (plus much more) and witnessed numerous farmers implement these techniques and skills on their land:

    • Integrated pest management and organic insecticide preparation

    • Terrace formation and sloping agricultural land management

    • Agroforestry design and tree planting

    • Pruning and tree training for various sub-tropical fruit trees

    • Mixed vegetable crop management

    • Asexual propagation techniques: grafting, cuttings with rooting hormones, and air-layering

The 2020 Farmer Training Vision

In 2020, we hope to continue these trainings each month, with additional topics focused on:

  • Animal livestock integration

  • High density plantings for agroforestry trees

  • Irrigation management and water conservation

  • Composting

  • and many more…

We also launched a vegetable nursery on-site where we are propagating various local varieties of peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and tomatoes. We distribute these to the farmers for them to plant and diversify their production. Our ultimate goal is to be able to form a cooperative with these 200+ farmers in the southern Haiti area and sell to larger clients in the area like hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores.

So, this Giving Tuesday, if you are feeling this way along with us, and feel that you’ve been blessed and would like to pay it forward. We would love the opportunity to partner together and bring further empowerment to Haitian farmers.

At these trainings, we hire Haitian agronomists and instructors to teach the 100+ farmers about how to steward their land and increase their production. In this way we are addressing both human and environmental needs through holistic development, and they are receiving this educational empowerment through our local staff.

The trainings are hands-on, and we provide tools, equipment, plant material, and opportunities to practice skills and techniques in our demonstration plots. The consistent attendance and positive feedback gives us confidence that collaborative trainings are the way forward for long-term impact in the region.

Sponsor a farmer to attend a training with a $5 donation. Sponsor a full farmer training meeting with a $500 donation.

We can fund the entire year with $6,000, so we only need to get to $3,000 with the match.

Help us fund the entire year of trainings in one day!

Help us spread the campaign news and share on social media.
